Day
2: Today we were privileged to go to a town called, Kneni, with Lynda
(a fantastic Canadian woman who works hard with Speroway Charity in her
spare time) as she wanted to meet children in the community to give them
sponsorship to attend high school (which is not paid for by the Kenyan
government). Michael, our awesome driver, took us on very bumpy roads
through the countryside to reach Peter's
home (a Kenyan man who is a principal for a local school). His wife and
daughter served us French toast and tea, and we got to pick avocados
from his tree out back! We made our way to his school, only to be
greeted like celebrities, as we are Muzungu (white people). They even
sang a song in Swahili saying, 'Many white people in a car.' Lol. They
all wanted to shake our hands, hug us, touch our hair and say, 'very
good hair,' and sang for us. There are 900 kids at the school. It's a
public school, but they all must purchase uniforms. After recess, the
bell-actual bell-rang and they ran off to their classrooms, separated by
grade. There are perhaps 30 kids in one room. They learn all subjects,
all in English, and take Swahili language class. Many classes asked us
to sing, so we sang Oh Canada in French and English. They wanted to know
about Canadian animals, weather, plants, and sports. It was an
overwhelming, and amazing day to say the least. On our drive home we had
to stop several times to be checked by the police-to search for
terrorists-good thing, we went to he grocery store, and local butcher.
Soon it's time for dinner, play time, and worship time. Another great
day in Kenya.
